Journalists Union trying to get rid of elected positions?

The Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA) is considering rule changes that would see the abolition of all elected fulltime union officials. This is a radical idea and one that has hardly received any media coverage.

 

Can appointed staffers and a CEO really do a better job than people elected by the unions’ membership?

Current affairs programming under threat at 2SER

Radio Station 2SER FM has decided to “abolish” the staff position which oversees talk and current affairs programming.

The non profit university station says it has to make cutbacks due to a budget shortfall but a large number of the stations volunteers are strongly opposing the move.

Volunteers have formed a new group to fight the move and say the stations 19 specialist talk programs will suffer or disappear if the decision goes ahead.

Political scientist Markus Prior claims that “the share of politically uninformed people has risen since we entered the so-called information age”. Prior’s analysis is cited in What is Happening to News, a book authored by veteran newspaperman Jack Fuller, in which he tackles the current crisis in journalism. According to Fuller, journalism is important and is responsible for informing us about our world.

Perth Indymedia reporter arrested with other journalists in Copenhagen climate protests

Alex Whisson from Perth Indymedia, currently in Copenhagen making a documentary on the protests and COP15 summit was detained on Sunday as hundreds of people marched towards the harbor in Copenhagen, chanting and carrying banners reading "Our planet not your business". Several journalists and photographers were targeted by the police and detained.
